LASIK
Some images from my LASIK surgery today:
First we had to wait like 5 minutes because the fire alarm went off. Thankfully they told us ahead of time so the horns didn’t go off when they were cutting into my eye.
You’d think this would be excruciatingly painful but it really wasn’t. The anesthetic eyedrops helped with that I’m sure.
Cutting the flap. The doctor lowered a ring onto my cornea and a suction clamp immobilized my eyeball and caused my vision to fade out. I remember focusing on a flashing red light as my field of vision shrunk around it. The light was eventually engulfed in greyness and I couldn’t see anything. If I could see anything, it would be a tiny blade slicing a 340° arc around my iris, so it’s just as well. This was pretty terrifying to be honest. It was over pretty fast though.
The flap is lifted away, exposing the creamy inner cornea. Here he’s sponging it dry.
Now he’s scraping my eyeball with a metal spoon, I’m sure there’s a good reason for it but I don’t know why.
Once they had the flap flipped they went to town with the laser. I had to stare at a flashing light for about 30 seconds. I felt like little puffs of air were hitting my eye- it was actually cornea tissue exploding. It smelled like burning hair and I must have had my mouth open because I still am still tasting burning eyeball.
Then it was over and they did the same stuff to my left eye.
My vision isn’t quite perfect yet, supposedly it will take a few days to get to a really decent level and as long as 4 months before they’re totally 100%. Everything went perfectly, and I went home and listented to some podcasts and took a nap. 12 hours on my eyes feel fine although I do have hickies where the suction clamp attached.
